My son and I watched the Simpson’s episode ‘A brick like me’ last night that was a fantastic take on The Lego Movie. Better yet, I wasn’t immediately aware of just how similar the Lego movie was to Philip K. Dick’s Ubik, until the Simpsons let me in on the conceit by making the bridge between the real and Lego worlds a ‘Perky Pat’s Princess Palace.’
In case you haven’t read much of Philip K. Dick’s (i find it impossible to use his last name alone – because, at heart, I’m twelve years old) novels / stories, Perky Pat playsets are used as roleplaying devices along with a drug called CAN-D as escapist tools in The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, The Days of Perky Pat, and I thought Ubik – but I’m not sure if I am remembering correctly.
In all of these stories the drug is the escape and the layout is the destination. The Simpsons used the same idea, but without the drug – just as the Lego movie did. In those, the layout is immersive enough to pull one in without the need for additional mental aids.
What would Philip K. Dick think of The Sims or Sim City?
Immersion without Coercion.
